2024 CLSC Junior Sailing Camp
CLSC’s 2024 Junior Sailing Camp, an educational program open to ages 8 to 17, is slated for June 18-22 on Carter Lake. Camp participants will learn basic sailing knowledge, boating safety, knots, boat rigging and fundamental sailing techniques.
Camp Schedule:
- Tuesday, June 18, 8:30 am-4 pm:
- Camp Registration is at drop-off; Parent/Guardian MUST sign the Acknowledgement of Risk and Hold Harmless Agreement form before their child can participate.
- Parent & Camper Orientation from 8:30-9:00 am
- Wednesday, June 19, 8:30 am-4 pm
- Thursday, June 20, 8:30 am-4 pm
- Friday, June 21, 8:30 am-4 pm
- Saturday, June 22, CLSC Junior Sailing Regatta, 10:00 am-3 pm and Celebration Potluck with Awards Ceremony, 5 pm

Cost:
$300 (CLSC members receive a 50% discount on this rate)
Basic Knowledge:
- Parts of sailboat
- Different kinds of boats and rigging
- Principles of sailing
- Points of sail, terminology
- Rules of the road- The main 3 (Stb over port, leeward over windward, overtaken over overtaking)
- Ropes, lines, and knots-terms, square knot, bowline, cleat hitch
- Boating Safety
- Equipment: PFD, whistle, Rangers, sunscreen, sunglasses, clothing
Carter Lake weather conditions:
- Managing strong winds
- Deciding when and when not to sail
- Dockside safety
- Mooring fields, no wake zones
Sailing technique:
- Rigging a boat-sunfish and / or Laser
- Steering from the stern
- Trimming mainsail
- Tacking, Jibing
- Getting out of irons
- Capsizing and re-righting
- Leaving dock
- Coming into dock
