2025 CLSC Junior Sailing Camp (July 8-12)

CLSC’s Junior Sailing Camp is an educational program offered every summer at Carter Lake, open to participants ages 8 to 17. Campers will learn basic sailing knowledge, boating safety, knots, boat rigging, and fundamental sailing techniques.  See below for more details on the specific skills and topics covered.

Camp Schedule:
Tuesday, July 8 – Friday, July 11 from 8:30 AM – 4:00 PM & Saturday, July 12 from 10 AM -2 PM (Junior Sailing Regatta) & 5 PM (Celebration Potluck with Awards Ceremony

Cost:
$395 (Non-members) & $295 (CLSC Members)

Carter Lake Sailing Clubhouse and Carter Lake Reservoir

Spots are limited to 25 campers.
The camp has filled quickly in past years, sometimes within hours, so don’t wait to sign up!

 

Basic Knowledge:

  • Parts of sailboat
  • Different kinds of boats and rigging
  • Principles of sailing
  • Points of sail, terminology
  • Rules of the road- The main 3 (Stb over port, leeward over windward, overtaken over overtaking)
  • Ropes, lines, and knots-terms, square knot, bowline, cleat hitch
  • Boating Safety
  • Equipment: PFD, whistle, Rangers, sunscreen, sunglasses, clothing
  • Carter Lake weather conditions:

Managing strong winds

  • Deciding when and when not to sail
  • Dockside safety
  • Mooring fields, no wake zones
  • Sailing technique:

Rigging a boat-sunfish and/or Laser

  • Steering from the stern
  • Trimming mainsail
  • Tacking, Jibing
  • Getting out of irons
  • Capsizing and re-righting
  • Leaving dock
  • Coming into dock
